50 Years: 50 Stories
The Boys & Girls Club of Watertown certainly had a different look 50 years ago. Housed in the building, now across from Dempsey’s Pizza, it served many youth until 1985, when the Club moved to its current site.
We’ve heard many stories about how this was the first home away from home for youth in the community. From the very first board meetings in the “Blue Room” to the Exercise Room in the attic, this laid the foundation for many great programs!
The Boys & Girls Club of Watertown Mission: “The mission of the Boys & Girls Club of Watertown is to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.”
This photo is circa 1972 on a horse riding trip to Wessington, South Dakota, a town just over 100 miles from Watertown.
Courtney Livingston started volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club while working with Engelstad Electric in the early 1970s.
The Watertown Area Community Foundation embraced the Boys & Girls Club of Watertown roughly 40 years ago when it awarded the Club its first grant in the early ‘80s.
At the Boys & Girls Club of Watertown, the Five Key Elements have been the foundation of enabling our young people to reach their full potential.
One of the most successful forms of sharing our Club mission, impact, events, and fundraisers is through radio waves.
In 1984, the Board of Directors raised $526,000 to construct a new facility adjacent to the high school and the indoor swimming pool.
The Boys & Girls Club will always push the importance of our key programs to better your child and the community for a better future.
Jeff Amy was a visionary leader at the foundational level of the Boys & Girls Club of Watertown.
The Teen Court program was established in Codington County in 2007 by the Boys & Girls Club of Watertown in partnership with the States Attorney’s Office.
The Boys & Girls Club of Watertown Board of Trustee’s group is comprised of past Board of Director Members who continue to dedicate their time and talents to advancing the organization’s mission.
The Blue Door Derby Camel Races started in 2015 after a board member attended a Camel Race event in Michigan.
The Boys & Girls Club of Watertown Endowment Fund was launched in the early 2000s to serve the future generations of Club youth members and families.
Fun. Trusted. Creative. These are three words to describe past staff member Nancy Hauck, who served the Boys & Girls Club for 19 years.

If you came to the Club in the 90’s, you would remember Marlene & Vera in the kitchen. Marlene & Vera were volunteers at the Boys & Girls Club of Watertown for 20 years.
The City of Watertown has been a valuable partner since 1984. Community leaders decided a facility to serve both the recreation needs of adults and youth together was a beneficial solution for the betterment of the future of Watertown.
Linda dedicated her professional career to the youth and families in the Watertown community.
