Touch Club 101

The Torch Club is a place for Boys & Girls Club members of ages 11 to 13 to learn how to make a difference in themselves and in others lives through service, leadership, and demonstrating good character. These days younger kids may not be getting the examples and encouragement they need to become a good citizen and leader in the community, so Torch Club was created to exactly that. In the program, kids learn how to work together to plan and create activities  in four areas: service to Club and community; education; health and fitness; and social recreation.

Through these service activities, Torch Club member recognize Club and community needs, create programs and activities, and to actively participate in their community. Just these past couple months, Our Torch Club has participated in the PACH Program,  set up for the Halloween party,  and  hosted a dance party for the Club. Helping in these events they get to have fun, learn how to help others, meet new people, and become apart of the community.

Torch Club members also take part in educational activities that focus on personal development. These activities develop their social skills , problem-solving, communications, goal-setting and decision-making skills. The objective is to have teens develop a moral compass and value qualities such as honesty, justice, fairness and respect for self and others.

BGC Golf Academy

The PGA of America (PGA) and United States Golf Association (USGA) today announced the new PGA Sports Academy golf program to youth at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Watertown. Golf training equipment and instructional support from PGA Professionals will be provided through this partnership to help youth build character, develop healthy lifestyles, and learn the game of golf. The Club will implement the five- to six-week curricula every Tuesday and Thursday.

The three core components of the partnership are:

  • PGA Professionals serve as instructors, utilizing space both in and out of local clubs to facilitate the PGA Sports Academy program.
  • Professionals teach basic skills and the Rules of Golf, in addition to coordinating contests, games and a visit to a local golf course to reinforce both the fun of the game and skill development.
  • The golf training clubs and equipment used for the program at each Boys & Girls Club allows for safe golf activity in limited space, and is designed for multiple users.

“We are excited to be able to continue to expose youth here in Watertown to the sport of golf, thanks to the partnership with The PGA and USGA,” said Matt Steiner, Gym Coordinator.  “The many merits of golf – determination, focus, discipline, and respect – also include fitness and fun, and the promotion of healthier lifestyles. This program opens doors to new experiences to help the young people we serve become positive role models, better citizens and have even greater futures.”

The PGA of America will support the implementation and expansion of the PGA Sports Academy program, which teaches youth age 8-13 basic golf skills along with good character and life skills promoted by Boys & Girls Clubs across the country. For many of the Club members, this will be the first time they have ever held and swung a golf club. The partnership’s goal is to teach Boys & Girls Clubs youth golf equipment basics, the rules of golf, fundamentals of the grip and swing, behavior and etiquette on and off the course, golf terminology and the scoring system, fitness and nutrition, and how to have fun while playing golf.
